In Nepal, basic health services are provided by the government run health units such as health post, sub health post and primary health center. The services provided by government run health units aren’t free but they are relatively cheaper compared to private sector run health units.
The government-run health units provide ambulatory care for several diseases and many of them do not offer diagnostic tests. Some of them have basic pathology laboratory facilities offering limited number of tests such as blood, urine, sputum etc. In remote villages of Gorkha, the provision of standard clinical health laboratories and cost-effective quality services for the local communities continue to be a major challenge.
Due to the limited number of diagnostic tools in the pathology lab, technicians are not able to find out common disease cases and conditions. As a consequence, health professionals have to refer patients in distant health centers or district hospitals. For proper diagnosis of diseases, quality medical laboratory facilities are a prerequisite of all health systems. Accordingly, a medical doctor utilizes the pathology lab reports for making health decisions and saving lives. In other words, the pathology lab report is the basis for medical diagnosis, proper treatment of diseases and checking the progress of the patients. Only by making laboratory services accessible to the local communities, we can make progress in the quality health services.
Thus, this project aims to provide diagnostic materials and resources for pathology laboratories that will help to enhance the diagnostic process and address the health problem in remote villages of Gorkha.
The Health Lab Aid Project is a great initiative to provide pathology lab equipment in remote health posts of Gorkha. Our goal is to enhance good quality pathology laboratory services in 25 community health posts of Gorkha. Since there are altogether 25 health posts to be supported under this project, the project will be held in different phases according to the accrued funding amount and possibilities.
As a pilot project, we have already supported the Bungkot Health Post of Sahid Lakhan Rural Municipality and handed over as well. After the success observed in the pilot project, our organization has launched the first phase of this project. The remaining project location and numbers of Health posts to be supported under this phase are:
Gorkha Municipality – 1
Arughat Rural Municipality – 1
Gandaki Rural Municipality – 1
After the successful completion of the first phase of this project, we will proceed towards next phase. So, for the next phase of this project, we are still in search of potential and the interested donors who could support us financially to make this project happen. We are hopeful to take this project to the next level. Sambhav Nepal heartly welcomes the supporting hand to create positive changes in the society and add a brick to solve the existing health related problems of the society.
LATEST UPDATE June 2025
Following the successful completion of the first phase of the “Health Lab Aid” project, efforts to strengthen local health centers in the rural areas of Gorkha district have entered the next phase. This time, the focus has shifted to Tsum Nubri Rural Municipality, where support will be extended to Tsyo Health Center, one of the key health institutions in this remote Himalayan region.
The broader goal of the project is to enhance the infrastructure and diagnostic capacity of 25 health posts and centers across rural Gorkha. In line with this objective, Tsyo Health Center will be equipped with essential medical supplies, basic laboratory equipment, and capacity-building support to improve service delivery for the local population.
All necessary preliminary procedures for the implementation of this phase have been completed to ensure smooth execution. An official approval letter has already been received from the Social Welfare Council of Nepal, affirming compliance with national regulatory standards and allowing for formal commencement of project activities. Coordination with local authorities and health officials is ongoing to ensure that the support provided is both relevant and sustainable.
This phase of the Health Lab Aid project represents a continued commitment to improving access to quality healthcare services in hard-to-reach and underserved communities.
