The Teacher Training Program 2012, conducted by the Australian Rotary Volunteer Team and facilitated by Sambhav Nepal, has concluded with remarkable success in the Dharapani Secondary School, Arupokhari village, Gorkha. The team of six highly qualified education experts set off to the village in the week long program which was held from January 13 to 20, 2012. More than 80 local teachers from Arupokhari and adjoining villages took part in the training program. The volunteers' tremendous dedication to uplift the educational scenario in a remote village is indeed, commendable. They presented the teachers with advanced pedagogical techniques and materials which would aid in making teaching more effective and engaging.

Volunteer House in Bhairabi under construction
Tuesday, 17 January 2012 00:00
The construction of the long awaited Bhairabi Volunteer House is in full swing. The building, which can accommodate up to 5 volunteers, is estimated to be completed by April this year. The volunteer house project is sponsored by the Nepal School Project, Syndey, Australia, made possible by the generosity of Allan Waldon and Richard Jackson. The main purpose behind undertaking this project is to provide proper lodging and boarding for volunteers eager to lend a helping hand in Sambhav Nepal's projects, including assisting, complementing and/or supplementing Bhairabi Primary School's frail English faculty.
We are constantly seeking interested parties to contribute their precious time and crucial skills in helping us out in Arupokhari schools as well as in Sambhav's community development projects. The need for the volunteer rooms has arisen as the number of volunteers started rising. Though previously they were assigned to host families, the volunteers now are able to plan their stay in their own time schedule, without having to stick to the host family's requirements. This would also give the volunteers more privacy, besides having a more economical lodging option, especially if their stay is longer.

The volunteer house will include a dorm hall, a kitchen, a balcony and lockers for the volunteers, who will also have access to the internet and international call (via UTL wireless connection). Needless to mention, it will be fully furnished with bunk beds, desks and chairs. Moreover, the well established toilet in Bhairabi (with improved water supplies) will also be at the guests' disposal. Biogas or an alternative source of cooking method like solar cookers will be adopted to not only minimize the carbon footprint during the stay but also to encourage locals to adopt similar eco-friendly and cost-effective methods in their households.
The facility is situated on the second floor of the Bhairabi Primary School building, from where one gets stunning views of the chain of hills, the mountains (Ganesh Himal range) and the majestic sunrise. The serene surrounding of the volunteer center, coupled with the opportunity to immerse in the remote Nepalese lifestyle while making a difference in the community, we're confident, will be a rewarding experience for the volunteers!

Toilet Project in Dharapani Secondary School Complete
Thursday, 05 January 2012 00:00
Renovation of the toilet in Dharapani has been completed. The project, funded by the Nepal School Project and the Rotary Australia World Community Service, makes use of high grade materials, including a brick & mortar structure with pillar support - a rarity in the village! The only such toilet in the entirety of Arupokhari is in the Bhairabi Primary School, also contructed by Sambhav Nepal with Australian donation.
The Dharapani's toilet was in much need of attention as there was no improved water sources or sewer system. There was no proper flush and hence the waste would more likely than not overflow most of the time.
The reconstructed facility, though has four stalls - for girls, boys, teachers, volunteers and general. The toilet is complete with a water storage tank and pipes installed and currently serves hundreds of students and the teachers of Dharapani School.

Renovation of Balodaya Primary School Complete
Tuesday, 20 December 2011 00:00
Sambhav Nepal has completed the final phases of the renovation work at Balodaya Primary School, Arupokhari-2, Gorkha. The project started in May 2011 with the help of the donors Warren and Dympna Sly. The main objective of this project was to repair the walls, cement-plaster the pavements and the classroom floors. The window frames have been repaired or replaced depending on the extent of the damage. Lastly, the furnitures were repaired and the building repainted. There are nearly 100 students currently enrolled in the school, who will benefit directly from this renovation project. The school had struggled to accumulate adequate funds for maintenance of the physical infrastructure, yet through the benevolence of Australian donors and wellwishers, this noble task has been successfully completed. We hope the renovation yields a positive outcome in the community and motivate more children to attend school in a safer environment.
