Dharapani Lower Secondary School

Current Situation

The school comprises of two buildings comprising of ten rooms, with 312 students currently attending classes from class one to class eight, our classes are grossly overcrowded, with as many as 52 students jammed into a room designed for 30 students, which hinders the quality of current teaching standards. More teachers are required and the option of English medium classes for math's, Science, and English is desperately needed. There is one tap but no running water and only one local toilet for the whole school, staff and students. Only five of the nine teachers are permanent and the other four teachers get no payment from the government which means all the village people contribute to pay for the wages of four teachers, the wage levels are below basic as the local people cannot afford to pay higher wages as they have no income sources.

The building itself is very weak as it was originally made from mud and stone, it's in desperate need of cement restoration, otherwise the building may have to be demolished and rebuilt in years to come.  You see the photos of this school from photo gallery page.

There is no library, teaching or learning materials, furniture needs to be updated as some students sit on the floor, playing materials for the students and currently there is no playground for the children or garden. All teachers teaching facilities and materials are based on text books as they have no practical facilities such as a computer, photocopy.

Every teacher must write out the exam for each of their students as the facilities are non existent, there are 4 exams each year.
