In 2006 Allan Waldon trekked to Everest Base Camp with his Nepalese guide Prem Khatri. Prem originally from Ratmate village and knows first hand the hardship of walking long hours each day to get an education, as a child he used to walk 4 hours a day down to the local Market area and back up to his home village at the young age of 8.
On Allan's return to Australia he realized how privileged the Australian children are with modern facilities and quality education everyday that is sometimes taken for granted.
Allan and Prem remain in constant contact and established that there was an immediate need for school renovations along with many other requirements.
Allan has been able to seek support and donations from Schools and Individuals base in Sydney with sausage sizzles. With this support they have been able to employee local people while providing a new tin roof as the old one was ire-repairable and continually leaked. New wooden support frames were also added to ensure its stability and safety.
Allan has also been able to supply enough funds to provide desks for both classes.
Prem and Kathy made a personal donation which supplied the school of class 1 and 2 with enough text books and stationary to last them for one year.
As the existing water supply is contaminated with human and animal wastes, agricultural runoff, and industrial effluents we have been able to install the Ratmate Village with a new water supply system which provides 3 villages which in-habits 600 people with clean water and many access points.
Allan continues his remarkable efforts to seek further support and donations from within his hometown of Turramurra.
